How to Apply for Financial Aid

• Obtain your Federal Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you are a dependent student, both you and your parent must each apply for a Federal PIN.
• After January 1, complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online, or obtain the FAFSA from your guidance office, from the Federal Student Aid Information Center at (800) 4FEDAID (toll free), or from any one of the regional financial aid offices at Rutgers.
• Fill out the FAFSA, making sure to complete Step 6 as follows:

• We strongly recommend you submit the FAFSA online. FAFSA on the web has built-in edits that enhance accurate reporting. Your FAFSA must be received by the U.S. Department of Education's Central Processing System (CPS) by Rutgers ' priority filing date of March 15, or by October 1 if you are applying for spring term admission.
• Visit the Office of Financial Aid for updated information about the application process.

Sources of Aid

Basic types of financial aid can be divided into three categories, including gift aid (grants, scholarships, and fellowships), loans, and employment:

• Gift Aid (scholarships, awards, and grants) does not require repayment
  • Grants require financial need to be demonstrated
  • Scholarships and awards have academic or other special requirements
• Loans must be repaid, usually after the student leaves college
• Employment programs allow you to earn money for personal and other expenses through a part-time job

In developing your aid package, decisions are based upon financial need, qualifications, and the funds available to the university.
